SOF Week has become one of Tampa’s signature annual events, but attending the first day made it clear that this is far more than a traditional convention. The scale of the gathering was immediately apparent. Activities stretched across the Tampa Convention Center, the JW Marriott Tampa Water Street, and the Tampa Marriott Water Street, effectively turning downtown Tampa into a sprawling campus for the global special operations community.
Hosted in partnership with U.S. Special Operations Command and the Global SOF Foundation, SOF Week draws military leaders, defense contractors, technology companies, entrepreneurs, and international delegations from around the world. With USSOCOM headquartered at nearby MacDill Air Force Base, Tampa serves as a natural home for the event and continues to strengthen its role as a center for military innovation and collaboration.
The atmosphere throughout downtown reflected the importance of the gathering. Hotel lobbies, restaurants, walkways, and meeting spaces were filled with attendees discussing technology, procurement, defense strategy, autonomy, and the future of military operations. Conversations seemed to happen everywhere.
One of the biggest highlights of the first day was the large networking reception held Monday night at Sparkman Wharf. The entire waterfront entertainment district and adjoining restaurants were reserved for the event, and every available space appeared packed. Military personnel, defense companies, startups, and investors all mingled together in a setting that felt energetic and highly collaborative.
What stood out most about the evening was how broad the defense technology ecosystem has become. The event brought together not only traditional military contractors, but also software developers, autonomy companies, AI firms, sensor manufacturers, drone companies, and communications specialists. It created the sense that modern defense innovation is increasingly being driven by interconnected technologies rather than standalone systems.
For someone attending SOF Week for the first time, the opening day served as an impressive introduction to both the size of the event and the growing influence of autonomy and advanced technologies within military operations.
